While the Franklin Area Nonprofit Network seems to have been quiet, things are busy behind the scenes. The Steering Committee has met and set up this survey to gather info on day/times for future meetings and networking events.

There is also work underway preparing for a 'community action day' sometime in 2022. Stay tuned for info on this as it develops. You'll have time to prepare to participate.

Dear Friends,
And just like that, we find ourselves at the end of 2021. We thank you for your participation throughout this entire year as we learned and shared ideas, challenges and solutions. We are looking forward to another full year of Lunch and Learns, affinity groups, and community collaborations in 2022! (Check out the new affinity group we are launching in on January 5th)

Ask a CPA: Considerations to manage and grow your nonprofit organization
Susan McCarthy, CPA, MST, CSEP
As 2021 comes to a close many nonprofits are focusing on getting their financial houses in order. This Lunch and Learn led by Susan McCarthy CPA will be an opportunity to learn and ask questions. Susan will address specific areas in Finances and Accounting as well as Fundraising and Operations. For example, in the area of Finances and Accounting Susan will discuss:
  • Accounting Systems and Processes
  • Accounting Policies
  • Internal Controls
  • Accounting Software
  • Financial Reporting
  • Annual Nonprofit returns
  • Annual Budget/Cashflow projections
  • Insurance
She will also share a resource list as well as a roadmap for identifying the 10 Key Steps to Close the Gap Between Setting Goals and Achieving Them.

Let's talk about Standing up, Speaking Up, and Bearing Witness

We've all been there. You find yourself in a situation where you know you are witnessing harm being done to another person and you want to intervene. But how? What do you say? How do you go from being a passive onlooker to an active bystander?

This Lunch and Learn will introduce Training Active Bystanders which has been brought to MetroWest through a collaboration between Open Spirit and Jewish Family Services.

Rev. Dr. Debbie Clark and a TAB trainer will give an overview of the training developed by Quabbin Mediation which draws upon research and the wisdom of the gathered participants to identify barriers to active bystandership and develop ways to overcome them. You will leave this Lunch and Learn with a better understanding and tools to move from silence to action in 2022.

Designed for Executive Directors or leaders of single-staffed, small-staffed, or volunteer organizations. Share issues, exchange ideas, and discuss challenges and strategies in a supportive, casual yet confidential environment. Join our monthly Lone Rangers meeting facilitated by Sarah Baldiga, Executive Director of the Rise Above Foundation, and Helen Lemoine, Executive Director of Leadership Metrowest.
The Lone Rangers group meets on the third Wednesday of every month.

We are thrilled to announce that MWNN will be launching a new affinity group for Volunteer Program leaders who are building, implementing, or managing volunteer programs. Like our Lone Rangers group, this will be a place to share issues, exchange ideas, discuss challenges and strategies and support each other in the important work of aligning the work of volunteers with the mission of your organization.

We're so pleased that Polly Mendoza, former Executive Director of Neighbor Brigade and lifelong volunteer and nonprofit leader has graciously agreed to facilitate this group.

Her passions and skills intersect in the areas of integrating equitable practices, managing, and leveraging volunteer corps, and innovative strategic planningPolly worked with the Massachusetts Service Alliance and the MetroWest Nonprofit Network to complete the Service Enterprise training and successfully acquired certification for Neighbor Brigade.

The group will meet on the first Wednesday of every month from 12:30-1:30. Join us on January 5, 2022, (and help us name the group!)

ONEmetrowest Day - Oct 29, 2021

Building off their successful 2020 campaign, the Foundation for MetroWest announces its 2nd annual ONEmetrowest Day on October 29th with an increased emphasis on community involvement and raising critical support for its mission.  The Foundation, with the support of Foundation Trustee Louis Crosier, and his wife Hope, will match every gift made on ONEmetrowest Day, up to $50,000. In another effort to step up for the community, the Foundation for MetroWest is calling on community members to volunteer with one of six participating non-profit partners, going the extra mile to invest in the region through action.

The Foundation has served as a connector, partner, and resource for the cities and towns that make up the MetroWest region for the past 26 years. ONEmetrowest Day is part of the Foundation’s ONEmetrowest Campaign. Launching October 8th, the overall goal is to raise $350,000 for the ONEmetrowest Fund. This fund fuels everything they do to help the MetroWest region thrive – grantmaking in areas like hunger relief and youth and family support, programs, convenings, emergency relief, research and so much more. They are hopeful that the emphasis put behind ONEmetrowest Day will propel them towards their goal. More than 121 community members have already shown their support for the campaign since its launch.

 

“The Foundation is dedicated to investing in and strengthening the communities it serves,” said executive director Jay Kim. “ONEmetrowest Day is about bringing communities together to take action and get involved in the great work happening just outside their door. We always say, if you live here, we hope you consider giving here.”

 

Six non-profit partners will be inviting community members to volunteer throughout the day, forming new connections and opportunities between non-profit organizations and their communities. The participating organizations are:

 

  • Boston Area Gleaners

From 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. volunteers will pack, sort and assemble fresh produce boxes for families in need.

  • Middlesex Human Service Agency

From 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. volunteers will help assemble Thanksgiving dinner starter kits for the MHSA annual Holiday Giving Program.

  • Rise Above Foundation (remote)

From 10:00 a.m. - 12 pm volunteers will write care package notes to send to foster youth in college. 

  • Dignity Matters

From 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. volunteers at the location in Framingham will help create customized kits of personal care items for women in poverty.

  • Charles River Watershed Association:

From 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. volunteers will work alongside CRWA staff to remove invasive species from the Warren Woods in Ashland.

  • Cultural Alliance of Medfield

From 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. volunteers will refinish historic park benches at the Medfield State Hospital.

 

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation quickly pivoted its work to address the pressing needs in MetroWest brought on by the pandemic, granting over $5 million in emergency relief funding to date. During unprecedented times, the Foundation engaged the community and distributed resources to the region’s most vulnerable neighbors, tapping into the power of community.

 

“Throughout the pandemic, we had to shift priorities and adapt to address the changing needs of our community,” said Kim. “This is the role we are supposed to play as this region’s community foundation, and I couldn’t be prouder of what the Foundation has accomplished so far.”

 

This year’s ONEmetrowest Day matching gift challenge is made possible thanks to the Crosier Family. Louis and Hope have been longtime friends and supporters of the Foundation’s work, with Louis serving as the Board Chair from 2019-2021.

 

“The Foundation for MetroWest has been an anchor for the community during some of the hardest years we have ever faced,” said Louis Crosier. “We have always believed in the importance of the role they play in our community and are proud to take our support a step further for ONEmetrowest Day in hopes the community will join us in this day of giving.”

 

The ONEmetrowest campaign is an extension of the Foundation’s 2021 key initiatives, including ongoing emergency relief efforts, refreshing Impact MetroWest with additional data on race and equity indicators and more.
